I remember that the boy spent his own money to buy the kit.
He built a castle and they were able to explore within the magic world they created.
This is NOT Edith Nesbit’s "Magic City"
I read this book 15-20 years ago, so it must be from the 80′s or 90′s or earlier.

Well, the only other book I can think of is ‘Knight’s Castle’ by Edward Eager, which was written in affectionate homage to E. Nesbit’s book (Edward Eager was huge Nesbitt fan). But the children are given the castle in that book, they don’t buy it, so i suppose it can’t be the one. it does sound a bit like it though.
