can you really pick them under a cow turd? Do those spores and the spore kits really work in the “magical” manner? I have tried them a few times and I enjoy them, but I was curious about acquiring them on my own.

Yes, that is usually where they come from. I would be careful if you are really serious about picking them. You pick the wrong one and you could seriously poison yourself. These things can kill you, I wouldn’t even get near them again.
